It offended all the Asians (especially that poor Chau girl) boundlessly. No way will I be happy to learn from a dick on how to be more matured. That Scott is egocentric, talent-less and unsympathetic. It would have made a lot of sense if the nerd at last finishes him. Julia's personality doesn't excuse the fact that Nick, who appears in the scene in question, says absolutely nothing in regards to her racist remarks -- which is at best an avoidance and at worst a silent endorsement of her behavior.

I don't endorse racist jokes of any kind, even among a group of friends. The people laughing at the racist jokes may be doing so out of fear or a desire to assimilate and not be seen as Other. But people in close circles are often given leeway when it comes to issues of race, class and gender.

HOWEVER, people in professional settings (i.e. the one that Julia and her assistant are in), requires people to act professionally and respectfully. Racist comments should in no way be excused. On TV, these comments take on a different meaning. The way those comments are handled by the characters on the show speaks volumes. It says to marginalized groups watching at home that you are the punchline, or you are being used in service of someone else's character development or devolvement. And that is not a good feeling.

Re: When Race is the Punchline: Asian Jokes on New Girl

Using casual racism in the service of sexism doesn't make things better. Setting up a dichotomy of "bitch" vs. "good girl" is something we're used to seeing in movies and TV. And a lot of shows have introduced a professional woman in appearances only to tear her down personality-wise. Her personality also doesn't excuse the fact that Nick, who appears in the scene in question, says absolutely nothing in regards to her racist remarks -- which is at best an avoidance and at worst a silent endorsement of her behavior.

Re: When Race is the Punchline: Asian Jokes on New Girl

You're probably over this by now, but I think what you're missing is that what the lawyer was saying was bad. Everyone knows it's bad. Does it actually need to be pointed out as bad for people to get that it's bad? And wasn't there some sort of body language that suggested it, anyway?

I never thought of that moment as a joke. I thought of it as who that character is.

And, as someone with a lot of international friends, I have heard some pretty ridiculously racist things said to them, and watched them laugh like it's the funniest thing they've ever heard. I think the worst was when a guy said "We make fire rain from sky." To Japanese students, and he instantly was going "I can't believe I just said that" and refused to repeat it, and everyone was disgusted by what he said, except the Japanese students, who didn't understand. When it was explained to them by someone else (since he refused to repeat it) they laughed for at least 30 seconds, probably longer, and we all just kind of stared at them with out mouths hanging open like "You get that he just made a joke about the atomic bombs, right??" I've also seen a Canadian guy with East Indian heritage call my group of friends the "Kimchi crew" and use a bad Chinese accent asking if they want "fi-wi". The majority are Japanese, and whenever they saw him, they'd happily start going "Kimchi, fi-wi~ Hahaha~~"

Basically, I'm trying to say that you may not necessarily understand the relationship the woman has with her assistant. Maybe she thinks it's hilarious. You don't get to see her reaction.

Re: When Race is the Punchline: Asian Jokes on New Girl

If you've seen earlier episodes, you would know that the girl who made the racist remarks to the Asian, is, in fact; a bitch. She has anger issues as well. She's made to look like a 'bad guy' so the fact she made racial remarks only enforces the idea that they are bad. Meanwhile CeCe is of course, a good girl.

Re: “We Are Young” by Fun. The one where Jess' boyfriend Paul or whatever his name is confesses that he already has a girlfriend and that this girlfriend just happens to be the Asian, quirky-indie version of Jess.
How clever, right? Making Asian version of characters is just so...original. Not.

I thought I'd watch the show again after a hiatus, hoping that first was just unintended ignorance, but alas I'm here googing "racist New Girl" and finding more instances. What got me here was watching an episode where a girl Nick sleeps with goes "My therapist told me that infinity scarves were better but SHE'S ASIAN."

And what that's suppose to mean? She's unqualified?

I'm about to cast Elizabeth Merriweather off with the writers from 2 Broke Girls. These jokes are recurring and they're signifying some pretty fucked up attitudes about Asian Americans.

Re: “We Are Young” by Fun. The question is probably therefore, what was the shape of the writer's mind? >< I originally heard it presented as "the story of a girl losing her virginity" ( in the apple-peeling music video ), which leads me to think it is something more morbid.... but I'm not sure if that was the official video or not. also, to the idiot who said "sh!t happens"--- -headdesk- you are what's wrong with humanity. I really don't have the words for what I'd like to say... but when you have a daughter or a baby sister why don't you think about sh!t happening to them and see how it makes you feel?no form of abuse should be dismissed, and domestic violence and rape are a serious issue for both females /and males/. It's a serious issue and can very easily ruin the entire rest of your future. Even if you manage to get past it, you can bet it'll still have a huge impact. your trust, relationships, your view of sex, future relationships, marriage, future families, future kids, possibility to even have any of that... It sucks, okay? and that's assuming you were fortunate enough not to have your physical well-being completely ruined, that's only the emotional side, and not even a fraction of it at that.

Re: “We Are Young” by Fun. Ive always thought of it as similar to another comment, that he made a mistake, not necessarily a physical mistake, and even though the relationship is falling apart, theyre trying to put up a good front and not let it drag them down (for example "maybe we can new ways to fall apart/but our friends are back/so lets raise a cup") as for the first line mentioned "give me a second i/i need to get my story straight" im thinking thats not something the speaker is saying to an authoritative figure but something he's saying to himself, trying to clear his head, as hes been drinking and out of sorts ("but between the drinks and subtle things" "so lets raise a cup" and all the mentions of carry me home tonight")

Re: “We Are Young” by Fun. That is the way a lot of guys talk. She's trying to forget because he's beneath her on the personal rating scale. She's embarrassed for getting a little too drunk and sleeping with this loser. He's acknowledging this , but realizes he's still better than the d-bag hitting on her. The other guy's a d-bag cuz he's wearing sunglasses at a bar and his pickup line is lame by asking about some old scar. It's a dumb icebreaker fellas. Our loveable stoner makes the argument that at the end of the night and she's got nothing better going, they should hook up again and she shouldn't worry so much about it. We''re only young once and it's all just fun. He's apologizing maybe for being a dork or for being a one night stand. She may be trying to forget because she was a one nighter.
